The Scotia-Glenville Children's Museum presented their hands-on prgram called "Dutch Trade Beads" at all of our Family Movie Nights in 2009.
In the 1600’s, the Dutch traded beads to the Iroquois Indians in exchange for furs. By 1621 the Dutch West India Company was established and focused settlement and trade on the Hudson River. A very high value was placed on blue beads, as it reminded the Indians of the color of the sky.
Participants had the opportunity to create their own Dutch trade bead necklace. A simple exhibit on the history of trade beads was displayed.
