Time-Life Building
541 North Fairbanks
Chicago, IL
Harry Weese, arch. 1969

Those windows in the cor-ten base were later added by Perkins & Will.

Even as a kid I always really liked this one. Back then it was probably more due to the copper-colored windows than anything else, but perhaps because it also looked so complete.
Weese did a great job of achieving clarity in his structures and this is no exception. Base, shaft, capital. On the ground floor he managed to include a colonnade on three sides, surrounding a a sculptural foyer on several levels. The different foyer-levels were employed as to offer access to the double-deck elevator-entrances.
I've been trying to find a section through the facade in order to understand the reveals above the windows, but have so far been unsuccessful. At any rate, it is a very nice detail which brings a lot of depth to the facade.
The rest of the building is clad in cor-ten steel, which has weathered very well and goes exceptionally well with the windows.
