one way to renovate the concrete buildings of the 1960’s is to add extra floors. you get a new roof, and you get a new income from sale or rent to pay for it. our competition entry for “grantoften” is a good example. the existing buildings are typical for their era: large-scale social housing in which the logic of rational construction was allowed to overrule any other aspect, whether social, contextual or material. every country has these.
today, we still produce our buildings industrially, but perhaps it is possible to twist the demands of prefabrication. the rooftop itself is a demanding site, and we decided to use room-sized modules in order to limit on-site work. we used the simple wood construction of the boxes to introduce overhangs, balconies and roof terraces, giving the new floors some of the spatial complexity that the original building was lacking. this complexity is orchestrated carefully to allow people to see and meet each other, and to bring back the social dimension in social housing.
