chiesa di sant'angelo, perugia, on the byzantine route between ravenna and rome.
scan of photo taken with disposable camera.

the space is very roman but columns and stone work are spolia and what a wonderful mess they are, all different colours and heights...this is from a time of rapid decline. the quarries are closing down. the church is doing well even if the elite cannot quite control its fanatical masses who are tearing down the great monuments across the empire at the speed of one old temple for every new church.

yet the columns here are not from a temple - they vary too much. they come paired, two in granite, two in a rich green marble, two grey with long flowing lines...it makes me think of doorways in a luxurious palace.

and luxurious is the word. these columns with their flamboyant corinthian capitals, the subtle sensuous curves of their greek entasis, and the delicate lacework you can still detect on their worn bases are anything but christian. they suggest a culture with the wisdom of taking your pleasures in this world rather than waiting for the afterlife.

the conformist catholic church managed to keep alive so much of the ancient culture, christianity was a rebellion against - from the grand architecture to men wearing dresses and buggering young boys behind the altar.

unless you are one of the unfortunate altar boys, there is much to be grateful for in this.

more words, yada, yada, yada.
