palazzo di giustizia di palermo 1938-1957.
architects: ernesto & gaetano rapisardi.
the intimidating and gargantuan law courts, inspired by piacentini's reduced classicism, would be a symbol of all that is bad in italian fascist architecture if it wasn't for recent sicilian history which has made it more of a symbol for the struggle for justice.
its eight courtyard structure, intended as the centre of mussolini's campaign against the mafia but only completed long after the war, was extended from 1980 to 2004 with a cold, granite-clad piece of postmodernism, the size and shape of a small neighbourhood.
we were told not to take pictures and the whole area was filled with guards and anti-terror measures, a grim reminder that sicily remains a society at war with itself.

central staircase, ca' foscari, university of venice, restoration 1935-1937
architect: carlo scarpa, 1906-1978
the materials may be familiar to scarpa fans, but their treatment in the handrails of the 1935-1937 restoration is much more conventional than in his later works - the hammered iron surfaces bringing just a whiff of medievalism, popular for all the wrong reasons at the time.
or am I being unfair?
the carlo scarpa set.
