interior, central aisle rib vaults.
the lack of a transept is a reference to the simple basilica of the Danish village church.

what appears to be stone detailing is in fact ceramic, including the columns on the front. the narrow joints of the masonry further express the unity of materials here.
wen lee found a fine klint quotation in steen eiler rasmussen's "experiencing architecture":
"cultivate brick, the red or the yellowish white. utilize all of its many possibilities. use few or no shaped bricks. do not copy details, whether greek or gothic. make them yourself from the material. do not believe that stucco is a building material, and smile when your professor says that 'paint is also a material'. if you ever get a chance to build a house of granite, remember that it is a precious stone, and if ferro-concrete becomes a building material do not rest until a new style is found for it. "
this text is later than the little pavillion depicted above and jensen-klint had found his final position, dismissing derivative decorative elements and even ornament not made from the whole brick.
the moving final sentense, "if ferro-concrete becomes a building material do not rest until a new style is found for it", makes it understandable how klint could become a father figure to a much younger generation who would eventually become the first modernists in denmark.

trained as an engineer and later as a painter at the royal academy in copenhagen, jensen-klint was a latecomer to architecture - and what is more, largely self-taught. the tramway waiting-room is an early work in the sense that he had only completed a few houses previous to this, yet he was in his fifties when the project commenced.
klint's entry into architecture was polemical, he didn't care for the prevailing historicism and its stucco detailing and argued in writing in favour of craft and national identity. a Danish ruskinian, you could say, and very quickly a whole generation of young architects rallyed around him, making him honoury member of their break-away "free institute of architects", a rebellion against the power and values of the royal academy.
the bee is an odd work, a masonry oval in a busy traffic junction in central copenhagen, but as striking as his buildings often are - and high on the list of structures I remember from childhood visits to the capital.
stylistically, it is related to jugendstil but in that peculiar and crude Danish version known as "skønvirke" which drew on popular art and the aesthetics of artist/architect thorvald bindesbøll.
my grandmother worked here in the mid-fifties selling newspapers.
