axelborg, bank and office building, copenhagen 1920
architects: arthur wittmaack 1878-1965 og vilhelm hvalsøe 1883-1958

wittmaack and hvalsøe built a lot in copenhagen, but little of notice. they have their moments rather than masterpieces, such as this space in axelborg and the monumental facade of østerbro svømmehal, but on the whole they were a couple of heavyhanded architects.

architects: frits schlegel (1896-1965) and edvard thomsen (1884-1980)
sculptor: einar utzon-frank (1888-1955)
landscape (visible in the reflection): g.n. brandt (1878-1945)

architecture does death well, and the classicists appear to have had an advantage on the subject. the roman, even piranesian, feel of the chapel facade points away from the lightness or swedish grace of much of the contemporary nordic classicism. the gravitas here is real.

utzon-frank's angel of death is a favourite of mine. this stone girl moves me, the dispassionate look in her granite eyes as she carries her harvest, her naked feet off the ground. all that was taken from you, and she did not even look. it is realism of a kind.

(and yes, utzon-frank was the uncle of jørn utzon)

thorvalden's museum, copenhagen, 1839-1847.
architect: gottlieb bindesbøll, 1800-1856.

all the vaults are decorated, but none more poetically than in the dark corridor circumventing the courtyard where thorvaldsen is burried: a starry sky of pure cobalt blue.
