Many thanks to Martin Kimberley for the inspiration, yesterday I visited the Roman Catholic Church of St. Giles in Cheadle, not so far from Stoke on Trent. Suffice it to say, for the time being, that the exterior of this church belies what awaits when you walk through the door. It really is like a portal into another world! Watch this space.

No, this is not a set from a Harry Potter movie! This is the interior of the Grade I listed Roman Catholic Church of St. Giles, in Cheadle, Staffordshire. Commissioned by the Earl of Shrewsbury (who lived at Alton Towers before they installed the roller-coasters!) and designed and built Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (who also designed the interiors of the Palace of Westminster) between 1840 and 1844.
Not much point in me going into any more detail. Just Google the Church and Pugin. Both make extraordinary reading!
MUST BE VIEWED AT ORIGINAL SIZE, JUST TO APPRECIATE THE DETAIL!

The ceiling of the Nave of St. Giles' Roman Catholic Church, Cheadle. Not totally happy with this one but it was the best of several attempts. It's taken with an 8mm "Fisheye" lens which has a field of vision of 180 degrees and, so, gives a circular image. Problem was that this was hand-held, lying flat on my back, looking up at what is actually quite a dark ceiling but with loads of spotlights shining straight at the camera. Still, there you go!

Another shot from my recent visit to St. Giles Roman Catholic Church in Cheadle, Staffordshire. A simply amazing place! This one looking, from the Nave, through the Rood Screen, to the Chancel and High Altar, beyond.
The church was commissioned by the Earl of Shrewsbury (who lived at Alton Towers before they installed the roller-coasters!) and designed and built Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (who also designed the interiors of the Palace of Westminster) between 1840 and 1844. If you want to be totally enthralled for a couple of hours, just Google the Church and Pugin. Both make extraordinary reading!

A couple of "Uppies" from St. Giles, Cheadle, showing the Rood Screen plus the ceilings of the Nave and Chancel. Each is a hand held HDR Triplet, taken with the Canon Eos 5DII and Sigma 8mm "Fisheye" lens (which gives a circular image with a field of vision of 180 degrees!) Both are just a tad shaky as they are taken with me lying flat on my back on the floor with my arms pointing straight up. In each case, the longest of the 3 exposures of the triplet is about a second.
