Male great white shark Johnny heads to the surface, while beams of sunlight shine down around him. Johnny was first identified at Guadalupe back in 2005 and has been documented at the island almost every year since then.

Female great white shark Sabrina had a long scar that ran right underneath her eye, when I last saw her (October 2016). Fortunately, whatever caused the scar did not damage to eye, and the scar itself should heal up just fine.

Legend, a male great white shark, expels a stream of air bubbles from his spiracle. While some shark species have spiracles that can be used for buccal pumping respiration, the spiracle of the white shark is largely a remnant structure, as far as I'm aware. White sharks rely on ram ventilation in order to breathe, which effectively requires the shark to constantly move forward in order to push water through its gills.

Gianna, a 4.9m (16') female great white shark, begins to turn away from the camera. While some sharks are curious about cameras, most of them still keep a safe distance. Gianna made several slow approaches on this day of diving but never really came in very close.

This particular shot was taken using a submersible diving cage that was about 10m down. The cages act more as a visual barrier, which most sharks recognize and respect. While the submersible cage seems to be a source of curiosity for some individuals (others completely avoid them altogether) I have never personally experienced a shark coming in contact with it.

Today is World Oceans Day, and I figured Mau, one of my favorite male great white sharks, would make a good representative for the occasion.
