Seattle Skyline from Kerry Park, taken September 2014. I just got some new postprocessing software and have been playing around with it. Here's one of my first experiments in turning what was a relatively drab photo into something a little different; maybe I've gone too far, but i kind of like this look.

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis) and Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata). I watched this scene play out from a cliff top. The Surf Scoter came in a on small wave and I believe the Scoter was ill or oiled. It put its bill down as if to drink and the gull came over and attacked. I don't know if the gull was looking for a meal or protecting its chicks, which were being raised on the beach, apparently having fallen from a cliffside nest. The gull flung the Scoter around a bit and then let go. Both birds came up the sand out of sight below the cliff and after a moment only the gull returned. But I saw no sign of blood on the gull nor any attempt to feed its chicks, so I think the gull was protecting its chicks. The adjacent picture shows the actual bite.
