Sarnath is the place where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. It lay in ruins for a long time until Alexander Cunningham discovered it. Subsequently restoration work was carried out, notably by Anagarika Dharmapala, a Sri lankan Buddhist leader. This is the modern Mulgandha Kuti Vihara built in Sarnath, the ruins of the original are nearby.

Lalitgiri (also known as Naltigiri) is a Buddhist complex in Orissa comprising major stupas and monasteries (viharas), similar to Ratnagiri and, together with Ratnagiri and Udayagiri, part of Puspagiri University.

Numerous excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (A.S.I.) have been conducted since 1985, and continue to this day.

A museum is to be built to display relic caskets thought to contain bones of Gautama Buddha, and other archaeological finds for public display. The site was extensively excavated by the A.S.I. from 1985-92. The remains of a huge stupa, and relic caskets consisting four containers made of khondalite, steatite, silver and gold were discovered along with other important structure and archaeological remains.
This is the main stupa of Lalitgiri.
Xuanzang visited this place and this is mentioned as Pushpagiri in his travelogue.

Angulimala (Pāli: "garland of fingers") is an important early figure in Buddhism, particularly within the Theravada school. Depicted in the suttas as a ruthless killer who is redeemed by conversion to Buddhism, his story is seen as an example of the redemptive power of the Buddha's teaching and the universal human potential for spiritual progress.
Stupa of Angulimala, in Sravasti, India. It is identified with the remains of the Angulimala Stupa as seen by the Chinese Pilgrims in 500 AD. Locally known as Pakki Kuti. This is a small passage within the stupa, Angulimala gufa. This is apparently a drainage channel for preservation purposes.
