Lourdes is a small town in the south of France . According to believers , it is a place of Marian apparitions . The first one took place exactly 160 years ago , on 11 February 1858 . A local peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous reported the apparition of the Virgin Mary . Since then , it has developed into a place of pelgrimage for catholics . The spring water from the grotto at Lourdes is believed to possess healing properties . Samples can be taken home by the pilgrims .
