This is a short time-lapse movie of the amazing Aurora Borealis over the Cathedral Gorge State Park in Nevada, caused by the massive G5 solar storm on 11th May 2024.

I had planned to shoot Milky Way nightscapes at this dark sky location, but nature had other plans, making the sky glowing brightly this night. What an amazing event!

"Northbound"

Due to all the wars and crises along the path from Japan to Europe, airlines had to reactivate the almost forgotten polar routes.

Flying over these remote areas poses special threats, like erratic compasses, extreme cold temperatures and being very far away from the next landing possibility in case of unexpected problems.

On the other hand, the route offers unusual views, like the Aurora Borealis I was able to record during my Swiss International Air Lines flight over the Bering-, the Chukchi-Sea and eastern Alaska.

During my flight from San Francisco to Zurich, we flew a rather northerly route that led us into and along the auroral zone.

The glorious light show was leading the way from Edmonton, via Fort McMurray to Rankin Inlet and over the Hudson Bay towards Baffin Island and Greenland. In total, Lady Aurora was dancing in front of our windshields for 3 hours, until she was drowned by the approaching day.

During my flight from San Francisco to Zurich the route took us over Manitoba and the northern Hudson Bay. The was forecasted Aurora activity was exactly in this area. I therefore installed my camera on the windshield and was looking forward to see the show unfold.

Unfortunately, there was strong thunderstorm activity right where the most intensive part of the Aurora was and we were skimming cloud tops for about 40 minutes until the Moon rose and the Aurora was almost gone.

The time lapse movie shows quite a few interesting atmospheric phenomena: At the beginning you can see some faint airglow, which is replaced by the Aurora as we approach it. Towards the end of the movie you can see part of a lunar halo with a paraselene, a sun dog, produced by hexagonal ice crystals in the thin cirrus clouds.

This time lapse movie consists of 1000 exposures, captured during 2h45min flight time, while crossing over India and Pakistan.

The movie starts over the Bay of Bengal, approaching the Indian coast south of Kolkata and the flight path leads over Singrauli, passes between Agra and New Delhi and continues towards the Indian-Pakistani border. The illuminated border fence can be seen just before the high clouds start and the movie ends when entering Afghanistan.

Thanks to Alexander Eichler for the soundtrack.
