The most remote ancestors until now discovered in Calafell have 22,000 years of antiquity. A prehistoric cave, the Balma of the Graiera, it welcomed a small human community that hunted and fished in the torrent of the Cover.
In the municipality can be found some rest neolithic, but the more important old monument is the Iberian Ciudadela (
www.flickr.com/photos/smb_flickr/300830133/ ), a fostress of the century I before Christ, that it has been reconstructed and that is an even place to know and to experience aspects of the civilization of the íberos. The Ciudadela fell under the Roman conquest, of which an important archaeological deposit in the zone of the Vilarenc is conserved.
As today we know it, Calafell is originated in the Middle Ages, in the hill where the castle rises. The fortress appears documented for the first time in century XI. The primitive inhabited nucleus expanded under the hill until forming the present nucleus of the town. At the end of century XVIII, on the one hand the establishment next to the sea of some fishermen began, giving origin to the nucleus of the beach. The fishing was replaced by the tourism with the “boom” of the Sixties of century XX.
