From the boat, hugging the shoreline of the Intercoastal watewrway within the Aransas Wildlife Refuge area, we saw this group of whooping cranes. It is very unusual, they are very territorial and normally you only see a family hanging out together (two adults and 1 colt, which has a cinnamon colored head). Whooping cranes are quite endangered, with an estimated 600 left in the world. This flock is around 300, and winters here along the Texas coast, summering and breeding in western Canada. For 117 in 2017, #59, it can fly.
