I'm taking a photo of one the oldest mountain ranges in the world from my Appalachian vantage point in Virginia, looking down the Russell Fork into Kentucky. It is off the beaten path.
These settled mountains of Appalachia used to be a tall mountain range that formed the backbone of the supercontinent of Pangea. Through the eons, its ancient forests became highly diverse.

Swimmers, take a word of caution from an old life guard and scuba diving instructor who has a deep respect for current. Be careful around the surprisingly strong undertows that churning white water hints at. It can pull a person under and not let go.
