The eastern newts were mating in earnest. Pairs were everywhere and often an unattached male would approach a couple. After a hopeful minute he would move on.

This fabulous Northern Red Salamander was the largest I have ever seen. I almost fainted from excitement when I uncovered it. I wasn't certain at first what I had found. I estimate it was close to 7 inches long from nose to tail tip. So robust and dark reddish black it must be quite the elderly Salamander. I read they can live up to twenty years. I was quite entranced and we sat together in the woods for some time. Might be the cold cloudy morning kept it from scampering away?

The only thing cuter than salamanders are baby salamanders:) I am thinking these are Northern Red-backed Salamanders in the lead phase? ..... of course Sparrows rule all....that goes without saying :)
