Every October I do species counts of the sparrows each day. I don't add the Towhee in to my totals even though they are a "sparrow". The best days I have ever had in October are eleven and twelve sparrow species in a day. Will this year bring a lucky thirteen?

The Eastern Towhees are grouping together. The last few days I've come across small "flocks" of mixed sexes. Most will move south for the winter but if it's mild some will stay.

The male Towhees are so bold and confident in both color and attitude. The females could be considered "drab" by some people's notions. I think they are gorgeous with their subtle soft colors.

This Eastern Towhee was a delight to see in his transition from juvenile to adult plumage. It's the first time I've ever seen one in such perfect juxtaposition.

I was very happy to see young Towhees every day. They are in this juvenile plumage for a very short time. It's a treat to see them before they change. Can confuse many a new birder as to what they are :)
