I spotted a Darner yesterday and tried to relocate it for quite some time. I decided to search again today and was very happy to see her from a distance.....I tried every way possible to crawl/thrash/wade/swim? to get closer to her. I finally gave up and had to make do with a distant picture. Shadow Darner and a new one for me!

Dragonflies were once called "Devils Darning Needles" in old folklore. This Shadow Darner landed among the pine needles and I was just tall enough to get a picture. She has been ovipositing....notice she has dried mud on her tail tip.

The annual Fall Bird County started off fogged in and few birds. The flurry of bird activity after the sun came out was short. It was a day best left to Odes and Butterflies. We keep track of them along with the birds. This Shadow Darner was a nice sighting and good addition. I despaired of getting a shot in the dark woodland stream. This was the best I could do.

Caught this one by hand when I was birding (perched of course). A beautiful Shadow Darner.
