Christmas 1997
Mariazell, a village situated on the border between Lower Austria and Styria, is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Europe. It´s tradition as a pilgrimage site goes back to a papal Evidence of Mercy from the year 1345. The basilica of Mariazell houses with it´s high altar an artwork of special beauty and the Statue of Mercy from circa 1150. Of all the statues of Mary preserved in Austria, it is not only the oldest but the most stately. Each year the Post & Telekom Austria traditionally issues a stamp at Christmas time. The 1997 Christmas stamp is dedicated to the place of pilgrimage Mariazell. The stamp shows the Madonna of Mercy of Maria Zell.
