Grafenegg Castle, east of Krems in Lower Austria, is one of the most magnificent buildings of Austrian historicist romanticism.
First mentioned in 1294, the former farmhouse was surrounded by a wall and a moat around 1435. By then it was already a fiefdom of the prince, and later fell into the hands of Ulrich von Grafeneck, from whom its name derives, and in 1477 became the property of Emperor Friedrich III. It was completely rebuilt in the early 16th century, when the slender late-gothic tower with its almost renaissance gateway was built on the east side of the palace. After several changes of ownership, the property was turned into a fortified castle between 1622 and 1633. “Wallhäuser” were built at the four corners of the walled and moated complex, and can still be seen today. In the second half of the 19th century, under Count August Ferdinand Breuner-Enckevoirt and his son, the castle was completely redesigned in the romantic historicist style and given its present appearance by Leopold Ernst, appointed cathedral architect of St Stephan’s in Vienna in 1858. Between 1945 and 1955, the building and its furniture were damaged by the occupying Russian forces, with some of the books being removed or even used for heating purposes. In 1967, work was started on the restoration of the castle with the support of the federal and provincial governments, thanks to the commitment of the then bailiff, Dr. Gerhard Grossberger. The building was then finally opened to the public. What is worth noting is that the older reconstruction, although generally treating the existing building with care, nevertheless gave the castle a completely new overall impression thanks to the addition of stairways, arcades and facade ornamentation, as well as changes to the interior decorations.
Grafenegg Castle and its outhouses are located in the heart of a 30 hectare park with numerous sculptures and over 2,000, in part exotic deciduous and coniferous trees, with some ancient trees dating back over 250 years. The park was revitalised for the 2008 Provincial Gardens Exhibition, applying 19th century landscape gardening design principles. Today, the castle is a popular destination for day trips, as well as an events venue that occupies a fixed position in the Austrian cultural scene. In particular, the “Grafenegg Advent” attracts a huge public, while the Grafenegg Music Festival under the artistic direction of the famous pianist Rudolf Buchbinder has been a popular event since it was launched in 2007.
