The most striking landmark of the town of Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) is Schattenburg Castle, shown on this stamp. It was known as Feldkirch Castle until the 17th century although the name Schattenburg originated before this time. In Middle High German, the word "schate" signified "protection". The oldest parts of the castle, the watch-tower and the manor-house, date from before 1200. In the following centuries, the castle was expanded and modified several times. The 16th-century additions are of particular interest because they enable us to understand the changes in warfare caused by the newly developed firearms. The most recent modifications occurred in the 20th century; however, these works tried to preserve the ancient character of the castle. A particularly fascinating feature is the powerful tower. More than 22 metres high, its walls are up to three and a half metres thick and together with the impressive height clearly signal the original task of Schattenburg Castle: to protect the town of Feldkirch and the traffic across the passes leading south and east. The building served as watch-tower, shield in case of attacks and last place of retreat if the enemy had managed to enter the castle. Never inhabited, it was exclusively used for defence purposes, which explains why it has only embrasures but no windows.
