UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located in the autonomous region of Castile-La Mancha in central Spain, this ancient city was walled on 3 sides, using the mountain wall as a natural defensive barrier on the other side.
When the Muslim Arabs captured the area in 714, they soon realized the value of this strategic location and they built a fortress (called Kunka) between two gorges dug between the Júcar and Huécar rivers, surrounded by a 1 km-long wall. Cuenca soon became an agricultural and textile manufacturing city, enjoying growing prosperity.
Today, the textile industry declined but was replaced by tourism.

Designed and engineered by Santiago Calatrava, the Opera House (Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia), part of the complex of the City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia, Spain is designed to resemble an eye by looking at the building and its reflection. The building, which is covered with mosaic tiles is shedding those tiles after just 8 years after construction. The city of Valencia is suing Calatrava for the cost of repairing the structure.
