Heaven is sort of a relative place, and I imagine it would be relatively close to this place -- the first class lounge of Qatar Airlines. There you get everything from silken robes to delicate doilies on which to place your tomato (pronounced tom-ah-to) juice.

Hong Kong airport is a great one, as are many Asian airports. They put US Airports to shame. The security is actually nice to you there, and you don't get all the attitude of the TSA. The TSA looks so important with their little uniforms. I think they are just silly... but it is remarkable how people react to uniforms.

I was going to find a pic of the silly uniforms so we could all make fun of them, but then I found out that the TSA has a blog! How boring. It makes me real happy that my tax money is going for the TSA's social media operation. Look at this TSA blog entry on the Fourth of July and the YouTube videos they provided (especially the charmer about the dangerous "Sparkler"). Don't worry everyone, the US Government is now blogging for you.

This room is closed to photography for some reason! Actually, it’s totally closed to all human traffic. I’m not sure if this was a one-time thing, but I got the feeling it was because the ropes and whatnot that told me not to go in here seemed like they had been there for a while. You know the feeling. Perhaps they only open it for the rare events…

But I went through the silly ropes and took a photo anyway. The security guard came to get me, but he was pretty nice about it. I just told him that the ropes confused me and I figured they must surely be a mistake.

The Europeans are so lucky to have a semi-functional train system. I'm sure many of them find reasons to complain, but to me, it's all pretty awesome. The idea of a working train system is pretty foreign to Americans. This notion that you can get on a train in one city and then hop-skip your way to another city is kind of a novel idea to us! If you're in Houston, for example, and you decide to go to Dallas, then "getting on the train" isn't even one of the things that crosses your mind. I don't know that much about the passenger rail system in the US, and I guess that means its in pretty dire shape. Without even asking, I can almost guarantee our biggest passenger rail service is subsidized by the government. And that, of course, means that I am personally paying for something that I know nothing about. I'm reminded of this when I go to Europe and can get on a train in Montpellier and end up here, in Barcelona. And not only that, but the train stations are all pretty interesting to explore.
