On one of my first evenings in Beijing, I walked around some of the older parts of the city to get a feel for it. Whenever I have extra time in a city, I usually don't go too hardcore with the photography initially - choosing instead to explore on foot and get a sense of the place. But, you know, I do have my camera with me to get a few things here and there...just can't help it. Between a few streets, I came across this little guy sitting on the seat of a small motorcycle.

An all-Texas episode of Stuck In Customs today! :)

We have our big PhotoWalk on Thursday evening here in Austin. It starts at 7:30 PM. Be at the Driskill on 6th and Brazos. We'll meet inside the Driskill in the Victorian Room. All are welcome, whether you are a beginner, amateur, or pro. It's simply a very laid back event where we will walk to a location, meandering this way and that as a group, taking photos, sharing techniques, and the like. Afterward, we share the photos online, exchange comments, contacts, etc etc.

Also, if you tune into ABC news in Austin on Thursday for their midday news broadcast, you might just see me! I have a short interview on there. I'll also endeavor to get a YouTube of it to share afterward in case you miss it (like I will).

To share your photos from the PhotoWalk, you can post links in the comments here, or you can put them up in a few places. Share them on Facebook here, or share them on Flickr here!

As for this photo below, it was shot about two hours outside of Austin in a little town called Brady. You'd like it. They have a Sonic there. This was a 5-exposure HDR shot at f/16. This kept everything in focus and kept the shutter open long enough to let the clouds drag across the sensor. In these conditions, you don’t have a lot of time to fool around because the sun is bookin’ it towards the horizon. If you are new to the site, then you might enjoy reading more about how photos like this are made in the HDR Tutorial.

If you want to see how I made this visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

I found this guy in the Batu Caves just outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Batu Caves are enormous caverns that hold various Hindu temples and plenty of fruit for monkeys. This was shot after a quarter-mile spelunk through the cave and an emergence into a geological oddity – a shaft of sunlight shining downwards through an open chamber that had been carved through the limestone after centuries of rainfall.

The day was bright and sunny, and the monkey sat alone in front of the inky blackness of the cave entrance. This was shot as a single RAW photo. It only had minor HDR adjustments, to get the texture in the wall and the details in his fur.

This came from one of my favorite nights in Iceland! This was shot around 2 AM, right when I started feeling loopy.

I was on the edge of some precipitous volcanic rock, and there was a waterfall behind me. It fed this little area of rapids that emptied out into one of the fjords. There had been a light rain for a few hours, but the setting sun cut underneath the clouds to unleash some godly colors.

About 10-20% of my HDRs are in portrait mode. I am just usually in landscape mode for some reason. Part of it has to do with the way people consume these things -- on monitors. I don't like making people scroll up and down to see a photo. That's kind of a drag. That's another reason I don't like those super-wide panoramas. They are so difficult to pan around, even though there are a lot of slick tools. It's just not a "viewing" experience while you are busy using a tool to manipulate the photo itself. Do you know what I mean?

I found it!

I've looked at travel guides and driven on a ton of beautiful, scenic roads all over the world, but I think this road to Queenstown (on the way to/from Glenorchy) is the most beautiful in the world. The road winds down one side of a perfect, fjord-like lake, and every few kilometers, the mountain views change dramatically. Depending upon the time of day you travel it, the entire landscape transforms before your eyes.

Wonder what it looks like on the other side of the lake? You won't believe that it is in the same place! See this photo called "Mountainstorm" that I took on a previous trip to this location. It was shot later in the evening, so I wasn't able to properly capture the road that time.

What's the prettiest road you have ever found? I've seen conflicting guides of the most beautiful roads in the US... I'm sure everyone has their opinion... I'd love to know what you think!
