This Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Rupicola peruviana, was in a group of displaying males that arrive before dawn and usually disperse before sunrise as well. As flash photography is not allowed at this lek and space can be tight, a monopod is helpful.

ECUADORIAN HILLSTAR Male Oreotrochilus chimborazo. A male Ecuadorian Hillstar was found perching on top of Chuquiragua plants above treeline in the paramo of Volcán Cotopaxi in northern Ecuador on October 3, 2002.

The Ecuadorian Hillstar belongs to the family Trochilidae and is a high altitude hummingbird whose geographic range is restricted almost exclusively to Ecuador.

The flowers of the Chuquiragua plant are a major food source for the Ecuadorian Hillstar.

Un macho del colibrí Estrella de Páramo Ecuatoriana Oreotrochilus chimborazo se halló posandose sobre unas plantas de Chuquiragua en el páramo por encima del nivel de los árboles en las faldas del Volcán Cotopaxi en el norte de Ecuador.

Las flores de la Chuquiragua son una fuente muy importante de nectar para Oreotrochilus chimborazo.
