Hi, Flickr friends!
I wanted to share with you the technique of light painting. Many of you might be wondering how to achieve such perfect spheres. Forget about ropes and other things you may have read online. If you want to get good results, here's how I did it.
In this shot, I've captured two light orbs suspended in the middle of a forest, one blue and the other yellow. Here's a detailed description of how I achieved it:
Location and Preparation: I chose a forest because I wanted a natural and mysterious background. The dense vegetation and tall trees provide a perfect setting to highlight the light orbs, making them look even more magical and ethereal. I arrived at the location before dusk to have enough time to prepare my equipment and plan the composition of the photograph.
Equipment Used:
1.DSLR camera with good manual exposure control.
2.Stable tripod to prevent any camera movement during long exposures.
3.White LED light point, covered with colored paper for each desired color.
4.Battery-operated drill with a bar approximately twice the length from the sternum to the ground, with a piece in the center to hold the drill device, where a LED light point the size of a corn kernel is placed at one end.
5.Remote shutter release or camera timer to avoid movement when pressing the shutter button.
Capture Process:
1.Camera Setup: I placed the camera on the tripod and set a long exposure (323 seconds in this shot) to allow enough time to create the light orbs. I used a medium aperture (f/5) to ensure both the light orbs and part of the background were sharp. I kept the ISO low (ISO 100) to reduce noise in the final image.
2.Creating the Light Orbs:
oWith the drill resting on my chest, I walked slowly in a small circle to keep the light orb centered and well-defined.
oI repeated the process with the LED wrapped in another color, but in a different part of the frame to create the second light orb.
3.Composition and Shooting:
oIn the forest, I found a clearing where I could move without tripping over the vegetation.
oI decided the position of the light orbs to balance the composition. I placed the blue orb on the left and the yellow one on the right, leaving enough space between them so each could shine on its own.
oI used the remote shutter release to start the exposure, and by magic, the orbs were created. Oh, and remember to wear black clothing.
Results: The result is a magical and dreamlike photograph where the blue and yellow light orbs seem to float in the air in the dark forest. The blue light has a cool and serene tone, while the yellow light brings warmth and energy, creating a fascinating visual contrast.
I hope this description gives you a good idea of how I achieved this image and that you feel inspired to experiment with the technique of light painting. Feel free to share your own results and experiences!
Cheers, Sergio
