Watching the deep woods waterfalls freeze always serves me as some analog to magic. Not the kind you have to practice or have faith in, but rather, the very real surprise that drives all beauty. How exactly it'll happen is always uncertain, as water and ice play games of release and restriction. Poole Brook flows just slowly enough to hold itself back, rarely breaking forming icicles with some unexpected rush. St. Croix Cove Falls in winter is a mountain steady rising, and it won't be long before the upper and lower halves finally get into each other. The lowest, coldest places have a warmth in wonder. It can't be broken by any kind of chill. I find a hope in all the things most deeply tied to contrast. Here I am in proof, a little life in the time of greatest death and dark.
