Old-School Hunting Lessons
QUITAQUE, Texas – Henry Crawford, curator of history at the Texas Tech University Museum in Lubbock, is dressed appropriately as a 19th-Century plains buffalo hunter, and explains many details of frontier life to a crowd of middle school children who were on hand for Day 1 of Bison Celebration Days at Caprock Canyons State Park.
Crawford was also the volunteer coordinator for the weekend event, which includes several interpretive booths, displays, tents and activities, as well as tours of the only surviving wild Southern Plains Bison herd left in the world on Friday and Saturday, and a benefit concert on Sunday by Texas Swing band, Asleep at the Wheel.
Despite a drop in temperatures from the first cold front of the fall, Friday’s educational activities attracted hundreds of Panhandle area school kids, from Hedley, Patton Springs, Valley, Paducah, Silverton, and Wellington Independent School Districts.
