Welcome to Century III Mall.
This long, tortured, once lauded regional shopping mall has fallen to its knees with alarming vacancy rates and dilapidation. This beautiful, split three-level mammoth opened in 1979 by mall tycoon Edward DeBartolo and has been slow bleeding since its the 2000s.
In just two years, the mall has endured a quickening of lost vitality with two anchor closures, a decommissioned fountain, roof leaks, elevator and all escalators turned off. The short-lived carousel feature behind this area, once introduced to help revitalize traffic in 2014, was also removed.
The mall's owner Moonbeam Capital Investments continues to grasp onto the mall as it deteriorates in-and-out, racking up back taxes to the city of West Mifflin as well as an ongoing despute with SEARS, who backed out of its lease several years ago.
