This beautiful Korean lady owns a clothing and shoe repair shop next to the 7-Eleven I always get my coffee and boston cream donut. Passing their shop too many times to count, I've always seen that sewing machine right behind the front window and have been hoping to see her work the machine as I thought it would make a nice scene, but I just never arrived at the right time.

Just got back from a small job and it was drizzling all day and just left my camera in the car. I wanted to get a coffee around lunch time at that same 7-Eleven. Around that time, there were people applying new markings to replace the faded out lane markings and thought that would make an interesting scene. The drizzle completely stopped but the dark clouds still lingering made me a little suspicious so I brought a plastic bag just in case I needed to cover up my camera.

As I was waiting to cross the main road, I saw that the marking crew already finished the job and were getting back into their trucks. Because of that I didn't want to go to 7-Eleven anymore.

だけど,

I saw that the Korean lady was sitting down with a jacket or a pair of pants to repair and turned on the sewing machine light and set down to work. This was a repair; she wasn't creating a new suit out of raw fabric so you don't know if she would sit down for ten minutes or one minute. Waiting for the crosswalk felt like five minutes and from where I was, she was working very fast and was scared that she might finish her repair as soon as I crossed the street.

Luckily when I got there, she was still sewing away and with a 150mm lens, I didn't have to be close to arouse suspicion and got the 4-5 frames I could work with when I got back to the computer.

Originally I saw this as a black and white photo because windows and reflection shots like this make the scene much more elegant. Why I chose to do color was because I loved the seaweedlooking scarf she was wearing in contrast to the light pink sweater. I was trying to work a way to make the scarf pop out but the black and white wasn't working out the way I wanted. And the soft light from the lamp looked much more better in color as well.

After 3-4 years of passing the idle sewing machine, it finally paid off today.
