Soldiers from all over the country found themselves in a somewhat exotic region while they stood vigil on the Mexican border. Without engaging in actual combat, several of them wrote about their experiences, often in a comical light. This cover of a manuscript, “To the Border and Back” written by the First Louisiana Infantry that served in south Texas.
