This is my uncle. I went to him today to celebrate his 89th birthday.
If you knew what this man went through in his life, it is surprising he's still alive at 89 and relatively healthy and full of life.
This man is one of few people alive who actually saw the Nagasaki nuclear bombing during WWII. He was captured as a PoW and held captive in PoW camps across the Atlantic with other allied soldiers where they suffered from the Japanese regime and their cruelties. He worked on the Burma railroad as a Prisoner of War and later on he was transported to Japan where he witnessed the Nagasaki nuclear flash and mushroom cloud. He survived and went to Holland after the war to live in the Hague. He had a relatively good life here in Europe, but anyone can easily see that the war has made its mark on him. I know it, cause every time I visit him he tells me the same story about the war over and over again.

This is a tribute to one of the great portrait photographers of the past century: Yousuf Karsh. He made famous portraits of Fidel Castro, Churchill and Kennedy. This one is inspired by the famous Kennedy portrait by Yousuf.
Take a look at the cigarette, that is a reference to the Humphrey Bogart picture, also by Karsh.
And let's not forget Rembrandt and Caravaggio who inspired us all.
By the way, this is me and this is #1a/52 for 52 weeks.
