The oldest ride we own, the Gallopers was built in about 1895 by Robert Tidman & Sons in Norwich; when it was new, this would be the fastest most people had ever travelled.

The beautiful Gallopers is the centrepiece to Carters Steam Fair – it’s how it all began, and it’s still at the heart of the family.

Carters Steam fair Chair-o-Plane’s

The Chair-o-Plane’s history is a bit patchy – it’s believed to have been built in Germany in the 1920s and to have been adapted for British customers by making it run clockwise (roundabouts from Continental Europe and America turn the other way).

It was bought by John and Anna Carter in 1978 – the second large ride to join the fair after the Gallopers – and needed a good deal of restoration.

The ride features dramatic scenic painting of aircraft by Anna Carter and the chains which hold the chairs are reputedly from the decks of the Royal Yacht Britannia!
