Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK

Civic Centre is located in the north of the city. It was designed by George Kenyon and built by McAlpine in 1967. Its formal opening was conducted by King Olaf of Norway. In 1977 it was the location of a visit by the recently deceased Jimmy Carter, President of the USA.

Flambeau Shadow The Ceremonial Way leading from St. Mary's Place to the main entrance, beneath the circular Council Chamber, is lined with flame beacons on stalks. These gas-powered flambeaux come alive during special occasions. Here, one of the beacons casts an evocative shadow on the wall of the Council Chamber.
