The Hotel Californian opened in the Westlake district in Los Angeles in 1925. Once a nice area, over the decades it turned gritty and crime-ridden, and the hotel suffered many setbacks. It was demolished in 1995, and the two large neon signs were removed. One was placed in Griffith Park, where it sat there and rusted for over twenty years, and the actress Diane Keaton somehow got a hold of the other, and installed it in the backyard of one of her real estate properties.

A new affordable housing complex was recently erected on the site of the former hotel, and some very smart individuals restored the amazing neon signage and put it on top of the building.

Sometimes, L.A. can do it right.
