Our senior prom. I refused to wear what all the other girls wore: frilly dresses, a cross between scary bridesmaids’ dresses and a Grand Ole Opry costume. Including teased and over- hairsprayed high hair. Eeeek!
I did not make this dress, but chose a sleek halter dress with matching bolero jacket in a fruity floral pattern and platform sandals. I wore wooden jewellery and styled my own hair, thank you very much.

June 27 is Betty’s birthday.
She would have been 96.
She passed in 2021.
I considered her my mum, even though she was actually my mother in law. And she was fantastic in that role and a phenomenal grandmother.
Here, we were at my niece’s high school graduation party in 2012.

I don’t celebrate Father’s Day.
Too many reasons to list.
But Bill provided half my DNA.
And Don gave me so many good things, like month-long camping holidays in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Alberta. He was a brilliant landscape photographer. He attended every recital. He helped with algebra homework. He got so many things right. But he also was a violent and cruel man and I’ve spent a lifetime trying to reconcile these two sides to him. It’s exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling.
So happy Father’s Day to all the loving fathers out there.
Dog and cat dads, too.

This was my leaving New Orleans dinner with all my tribe, but one, at a great spot with live music… Buffa’s on Esplanade in the Faubourg Marigny.
