Emilio Sommariva (1883-1956) was the most prestigious Milanese studio photographer in the early 20th century. The Milanese beau monde of nobility, bourgeoisie, and the world of stage and screen flocked to his studio to have themselves photographed by him. In 1911 Sommariva photographed the well-known stage actress Lyda Borelli in her Salomé outfit, designed by Caramba, in occasion of her depiction by the renowned Milanese portrait painter Cesare Tallone. This effected in an intense series of wonderful studio pictures of the divas of the Italian stage and screen, such as Maria Melato, Helena Makowska, and Diana Karenne. Polish actress Diana Karenne (1888-1940) was one of the divas of Italian silent cinema. Between 1916 and 1920, Karenne fascinated audiences with her eccentric dresses and make-up, and with her primadonna behaviour. Afterwards she had a career in German and French slent cinema.

Anna Fougez (1894-1966) was a vaudeville star who shone on the Italian stage from the First World War to the mid-1920s. She also played in various Italian films.
