Roger Ballen, Fotomuseum Den Haag, The Hague, The Netherlands.
It is the margins of society and the shadow side of the human spirit that have always fascinated photographer and artist Roger Ballen, an American who lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. He made an international impression with his black-and-white photo series Countryside in 1994. The photos showed the grim reality of poor white South Africans, a group that lived in wretched conditions despite all the privileges during Apartheid. In the course of his career, Ballen started making installations, in which he mixed the macabre reality with pieces of scenery. People, dolls, rats and reptiles appear against a background of drawings of primitive figures. With this outspoken 'Ballenesque style', Ballen creates his own universe and has grown into a cult figure, especially among the younger generations. This retrospective invites you to wander through the psyche of Roger Ballen and ask yourself: what is real?

Between 1890 and 1930, two Copenhagen porcelain manufacturers created a furore with revolutionary underglaze paintings: Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl. In the exhibition Great Danes, Kunstmuseum Den Haag presents exceptional unique pieces by the two manufacturers that stand out for their technical quality and their entirely unique aesthetics. Although the pieces were collected by European royalty during the fin de siècle and made a great impression internationally, the objects seem to have been somewhat forgotten today.
