Yesterday, 27 September 2017, American publisher and playboy Hugh Hefner died. He was best known as the editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine, which he founded in 1953. Middle-class American society in the 1950s was notoriously strait-laced and the combination of tastefully photographed women and intellectually stimulating articles appealed to the post-war urban male. Asked what he was most proud of in 1992, Hefner told the New York Times: “That I changed attitudes toward sex. That nice people can live together now. That I decontaminated the notion of premarital sex. That gives me great satisfaction.” One of the earliest Playmates of the Month for Playboy magazine was Miss Bettie Page, 'Miss January 1955'.
