French postcard by Editions Jacques Haïk. Photo Combier, Mâcon. Claude France as the Princess Gonzaga and Nilde Duplessy as her daughter Irène de Nevers. Publicity still for Le Bossu/The Duke's Motto (Jean Kemm, 1925). 'Sword and dagger tale. All families will want to see Le Bossu." Selection Etoile-Films. The film was based on the homonymous novel by Paul Féval, who was co-scenarist for the film as well. Le Bossu was probably the first production of cinema owner Jacques Haïk, who would become an active French film producer and film distributor in the early sound era.
Plot: Jealous of the other man's riches, the Prince of Gonzaga (Marcel Vibert) kills Nevers (Jean Lorette) in a treacherous duel and marries his widow, Aurore (Claude France). But Nevers' friend, Chevalier Lagardère (Gaston Jacquet), steals Irène, the child of Nevers and Aurore. Several years after, he returns pretending to be the Hunchback of the Rue Quincampoix. He unmasks Gonzaga and holds Irène's (Nilde Duplessy) hand in return.
Claude France (1893-1928) was a French actress of the 1920s.
Born Jane Joséphine Anna Françoise Wittig in Emden, Germany, Claude France debuted in cinema in 1919, in the film Le Carnaval des Vérités by Marcel L'Herbier. Afterwards she performed in memorable films such as Le Père Goriot (Jacques de Baroncelli 1921) after Balzac, Le Diamant vert (Pierre Marodon 1922), Pax Domine (René Leprince 1923), Violettes impériales (Henry Roussel 1923) with Raquel Meller , L'autre aile (Henri Andréani 1923), Moderne Ehen (Hans Otto 1924) with Helena Makowska, Pension Groonen (Robert Wiene 1925), Le prince charmant (Viktor Tourjansky 1925) with Jaque Catelain, Le Bossu (Jean Kemm 1925) starring Gaston Jacquet, and L'Abbé Constantin (Julien Duvivier 1925) starring Jean Coquelin. Claude France was Madame de Pompadour in Fanfan-la-Tulipe (Rene Leprince 1925), Potiphar's wife in Le berceau de dieu (Fred LeRoy Granville 1926), the title character in Lady Harrington (Hewitt Claypoole Grantham-Hayes, Fred LeRoy Granville 1926), a double role as Mme Cornelis and Mme Termonde in André Cornelis (Jean Kemm 1926), and the female leads in Simone (E.B. Donatien 1926), L'ile d'amour (Berthe Dagmar, Jean Durand 1927) costarring Pierre Batcheff and La Madone des Sleepings (Marco de Gastyne, Maurice Gleize 1927) costarring Olaf Fjord and Vladimir Gajdarov. In January 1928, two months before her greatest triumph La Madone des sleepings opened in the cinemas, Claude France's career was cut short when she died at the age of 34. Grief stricken (over Paul Brunet, the man who left her) she committed suicide by opening the gas.
No life dates of Nilda Duplessy are known. When she entered the film sets in 1922, she had already been a Parisian stage actress for a while, notably in revues by Rip at the theaters Capucines, Femina, and Vaudeville, while she could be seen in Le Bel Ange vint at the Theatre Michel and in Le Tracassin at the Potinière. Remarking her fine beauty, film director Gaston Roudès selected here for Le petit Moineau de Paris (1923), starring Régine Bouet. Not convinced herself, she returned to the stage. Robert Boudrioz called her back to the sets for the more substantial role of Marina de Dasetta opposite Sylvio De Pedrelli In L'Epervier (1925). She played the wife of a couple of Hungarian aristocrats who get rich by cheating at cards. A young French noble (Youcca Troubetzkoy) falls in love with her. She is ashamed about her fraud and breaks with George (Pedrelli). The result was so convincing that Jean Kemm gave her the part of Irene de Nevers in the historical adventure film Le Bossu (1925) [see our blogpost on the film filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com/2014/10/le-bossu-1925.html ]. Duplessy confirmed her film acting talent with Barocco (1925) by Charles Burguet. After three years of absence, Duplessy took to film acting again in 1929 in the late silent film Les capes noires (Gennaro Dini, 1929) starring Régine Bouet, and filmed at Coimbra, and in the Franco-Spanish-Mexican production El león de Sierra Morena (Miguel Contreras Torres, 1929) also with René Navarre, and shot in Spain. In the 1930s French sound cinema Duplessy acted in a few more films, but always supporting parts.
