A follow-up to my last post...
Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia keeps herds of wild ponies contained in an area of approximately 1500 acres, for the purpose of maintaining these high country meadows. In post-Depression America, these high balds were formed by farming and grazing activities. In the 1950s, one of the area's farmers began breeding a smaller horse more suited to the mountainous terrain and colder temps. This breed, known as the Virginia Highlander, still enjoys doing their job!

Helene did knock us for a loop, but the region will bounce back. My county hasn't seen tree devastation and flooding like this in a generation. Of course many people lost everything and the recovery will be long and difficult. I look forward to being back out on the trails and watching the sun rise to illuminate the fog in the low valleys.

Tree ID experts, please correct me if needed :). I'm going with the white/flaky trunk and relatively small, pointy leaves.
