The Nez Perce, Umatilla, Yakama and Warm Springs tribes legal authority to fish on the Columbia River was established in a 1855 treaty. But it wasn't until 1994, that established “in-lieu-of-sites” were allowed to replace historic fishing sites lost to flooding from dams as you can see in these photos in The Dalles. Where The Dalles dam and these fishing platforms are in juxtaposition.

Thanks to the work of indigenous activists these first peoples rights to their land and floodways have been restored in some form

I think for the next week or so I am going to be posting some 4 x 5 B & W shots from my Columbia River Trip in early October. This along with a few more panoramas will be the last I post from that project this year.

The dry banks & bluffs along the Deschutes river are in stark contrast to the rushing turquoise waters & make for good mid-day black and white photos.

This was another angle of the waterfall I came across on this hike last weekend. Loved the large boulder that had fallen to the bottom and settled, it helped to frame up the area.
