An earthquake, one of Latin America’s worst ever, occurred in the northern part of Peru on 31 May 1970, and killed some 50,000 persons. It also destroyed thousands of homes, rendering their dwellers homeless, and touching off a massive international relief effort. In response to the Government’s urgent request for assistance following the earthquake, the United Nations, in its capacity as participating and executing agency for the United Nations Developing Programme, is providing the services of experts in architecture/building technology and civil engineering, consultant services in appropriate fields, radio telephones, building plant, construction funds (materials, labor and site supervision), and miscellaneous services. These projects are part of United Nations activities designed to counteract the effects of the earthquake. Shortly after the quake occurred, both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) provided Peru with emergency assistance. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) also sent a mission to Peru to make first-hand observations in the earthquake zone.
