A Somali man sits next to his herd of goats at Bakara Animal Market in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Once notorious for being both the site of Black Hawk Down, in which 18 American soldiers were killed in 1993, and later as an al-Shabaab stronghold, Bakara market is now slowly losing its past notoriety and becoming better known for its thriving economy. In the district's animal market, thousands of goats are now brought each morning, where they are sold on to later be slaughtered for their meat.

Mogadishu, Somalia: In a photo taken 09 November and released by the African Union-United Nations Information Support Team 10 November, a Somali boy holds a shirt aloft to dry in the wind at Lido Beach in the Abdul-Aziz district of the Somali capital Mogadishu. Lido Beach has become a popular spot on Friday's with hundreds of Somalis since the withdrawal in August 2011 of the Al-Qaeda affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab who had banned any such social gatherings between men and women. The United Nations Security Council on November 7 renewed the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeeping force for a further four months to continue providing support to the Government of Somalia in its efforts to bring peace and stability to the Horn of African country.
