This image is part of a set on the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota, one of Frank R. Gehry’s masterpieces. Hope the set conveys an impression of the splendor, beauty and complexity of the building and of my ongoing quest to discover the essence of Gehry…

The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum (WAM) alone is worth a trip to Minneapolis. It has been a teaching museum since 1934. The WAM is located on the Mississippi river banks on the campus of the University of Minnesota and houses its huge art collection; only a small fraction is on display at a time.

The building is one of Frank R. Gehry’s gems that isn’t nearly as well recognized as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA. Built in 1993 it underwent a major renovation and addition that opened in 2011. In keeping with the building’s location facing the river, the main façade is said to represent a waterfall, whereas the floor plan resembles a fish, with the 3 galleries of the new addition representing the tail fins.
