The Universitet metro station was opened on November 6, 1960 as part of the first stage of construction.
The station is an architectural monument, a classic of Soviet metro construction of the 1950s. The lobby is designed in the style of post-war Stalinist neoclassicism. The station's pylons are covered with brown-pink marble. On each pylon on the side of the central hall, 8 busts of prominent figures of science and culture are placed in niches.
