When I visited the jail of La Joya the proud director had big plans of modernizing the facility. He wasn't supported by those in high places. Two years later when I was back in Panama I took a cab to bring me to an appointment. The taxi driver turned around and asked if I still remembered him. He was the director, but was fired because he was to friendly and now earned his money as a cab driver.

In a jail in Panama the former diamond cutter acts as dentist.

He was arrested for cutting glass in a diamond-shape and selling them as diamonds. He now cuts, without being trained as a dentist, the rotten teeths of his cell mates.
