Pingsi (a.k.a. Pingxi; "平溪" in Chinese) is a rural township in the north eastern part of Taiwan. Located in a remote mountain area outside of Taipei and run through by Keelung river, it was a small coal mining town since the early 20th century.
Sky lanterns are traditionally lanterns made of oiled paper or tissue with a bamboo frame (but nowadays some are made with thin steel wires) that contain a small candle or other combustible material (such as the fake prayer's paper money dipped in kerosene). When lit the candle heats the air and causes the lantern to rise into the air. Ideally the lantern floats back to the ground when the fuel for the flame is exhausted.
Sky Lanterns are also known as "Kung Ming lanterns", since some say they were invented by Zhuge Liang (諸葛亮 in Chinese; Chu Ke-liang; a.k.a.: Kung Ming) during the Three Kingdoms period (184-280 A.D.) as way of communication (like signal flares) between two distant places at war time.
Pingsi's affiliation with sky lanterns is due to the inaccessibility of this remote and banditry-prone mountain area in the early days. In order to let others know that they were safe and sound, the villagers released sky lanterns into the air. The practice evolved into a popular tradition celebrated every year during the Lantern Festival. Sky lanterns are also deemed as auspicious. Nowadays people write their New Year wishes on the lanterns before releasing them into the sky. It is believed that these wishes will be carried into heaven where the deities will fulfill them.
During Lantern Festival, thousands of red and orange sky lanterns light the still night sky over the village of Pingsi creating a scene of unusual beauty.
