The Tribune Tower, at 409 13th Street, was built by Joseph K. Knowland as the home of his Oakland Tribune newspaper. What became the six-story base of the Tribune Tower was designed by D. Franklin Oliver and completed in 1907. The The 305-foot high, 21-story clock tower, designed by Edward T. Foulkes, was added in 1923.
From 1924, the Tower would appear on the newspaper's masthead. The top floor housed radio station KLX from its opening until the station was sold in 1959. After suffering damage during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the Oakland Tribune relocated to new offices in Jack London square and the tower sat empty until John Protopappas purchased it and renovated in 1995. The Oakland Tribune returned to the building in 1999, when the clock mechanisms in the tower were rebuilt, only to relocate again in 2007.
